West Maryland fishing destination offers free use of equipment
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is expanding its popular fishing gear loan program to Rocky Gap State Park, offering park guests free use of fishing gear and tackle. Eight youth-sized fishing rods were refurbished and several tackle boxes were donated to help promote youth fishing in the popular Allegany County Park.
Rocky Gap is home to Lake Habeeb, one of West Maryland’s top fishing destinations. The 243-acre lake is regularly stocked with trout and is home to enduring populations of catfish, sunfish, and large and smallmouth bass. Habeeb Lake also has a public boat launch, and canoe and kayak rentals are available during the summer months.
The State Park Loan Equipment Program began last year at Janes Island State Park in Somerset County.
“We are delighted with the success of the fishing gear loan program,” said Erik Zlokovitz, Recreational Fishing Coordinator. “We knew Rocky Gap State Park is a fishing destination and wanted to encourage new and inexperienced anglers to try fishing.”
“The rangers are excited about the new program,” said Sarah Milbourne, director of Rocky Gap State Park. “We have a lot of our own staff who are passionate about fishing and now we can share that with our visitors.”
Fishing rods and loaner equipment are available at the park’s camp store. The department is also considering expanding the program to other state parks as well as improving equipment and material options.
