Kayak thief steals $ 30,000 in fishing gear from yacht behind Lighthouse Point house – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports
LIGHTHOUSE POINT, FLA. (WSVN) – Tens of thousands of dollars in fishing gear have been stolen from a vessel moored behind a house in Lighthouse Point.
The thief was caught on camera approaching the 69-foot Viking yacht in what appears to be a kayak on Tuesday morning.
“This guy was a professional,” said Brad Cohen, the yacht owner. âHe’s covered from head to toe.
The con artist then boarded Cohen’s ship, which was moored behind his house, and used two custom fishing rods and reels, valued at $ 30,000.
“These rods are – they’re electric rods,” Cohen said. âThey are very heavy. They weigh about 25, 30 pounds each.
For about 10 minutes, the scammer was aboard the yacht breaking into the cabin, dismantling fishing gear and placing what he could in a bag. He then returned to the kayak and rowed.
Marc Wyckoff, the captain of the yacht, noticed the theft that morning.
” They are tall. They are bigger than anything else I have, âhe said. âNothing seemed out of place until I noticed two rods were missing. “
Cohen said he felt uncomfortable after the crime because he had a fence around his property and several security cameras installed.
âThe camera systems that I have and all that, I feel violated. It’s embarrassing, âhe added.
When asked how he felt about the theft Wyckoff replied, “Anger, anger, wishing I was here to see it happen because people have to work for their own business.”
If you have any information about this theft, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous and you may be eligible for a $ 3,000 reward.
