Soft lures have revolutionised the way we fish. These flexible rubbery lures can take the shape of many different baitfish species, not to mention worms and other crustaceans such as crabs and shrimps. Possibly the most versatile of all fishing lures, these soft plastic lures can also be the hardest of lures to master. However, once mastered there are few predator species that can resist them.
Soft lures can be fished in a number of ways, the most basic technique being cast out from a boat or from the shore and retrieved across the top of the water, this causes water displacement and disturbance that may mimic a baitfish in distress. Many Saltwater predators such as Bass find this type of lure fishing technique irresistible.
You can also fish a soft lure deeper in the water column by adding a little weight such as a jig head. A jig Head allows the soft lure to be cast out a little further and will sink the lure to the seabed. Depending on the type and size of jig head used will determine the action of the soft lure being fished. A soft lure used with a jig head makes a killer bait for many fish species and increases the versatility of the lure tenfold.
Other popular and highly effective soft lure fishing methods include Vertical Jigging, Drop shotting and Spinning.
Technological advances now not only allow soft lures to closely resemble baitfish and other natural food sources, but they can now also imitate the natural odours and flavour of live bait too. Tackle giants 'Berkley' are at the top of there game in the development of soft plastic lures that actually do attract fish by scent and encourage them to hang onto the lure for longer. The Berkley Gulp and Gulp Alive range of soft lures are biodegradable and impregnated with an attractant that may disperse 400x more scent into the water. This type of soft lure is highly effective and deadly for just about every predator fish.
