Boat Fishing Rods

Boat fishing on a calm blue sea.

Boat fishing tackle has taken a huge leap into the 21st century with boat rods in particular now being made from specialized hi-tech materials such as carbon fibre. While some boat rods are still made from fiberglass, gone are the days of split cane and other inferior materials.

Boat rods are available in a number of different lengths. Probably the most common being 6ft and 8ft in length. A rod of this length is easy to accommodate while travelling and more importantly, can be used safely and efficiently while afloat. Whether you fish from a privately owned dinghy or aboard a chartered vessel, safety has got to be of first priority. Rod lengths of over 8ft are generally used for 'uptiding'. This is a technique used by boat anglers where casting away from the boat may yield more fish. Kayak rods on the other hand are quite a lot smaller and more commonly of 2 to 3ft in length. Again this length of rod is purposely designed to be used safely and efficiently while fishing from a very small vessel such as a kayak.

You will also notice that most boat rods are categorized by a weight class, ie 12/20 or 30/50. This measurement is designed to easily identify, where and how specific rods should ideally be used. Rods labeled 20/30 are ideally suited to fishing lines of 20 to 30lb breaking strain. Rods labeled 12/15 are again ideally suited to lighter lines of 12 to 15lb breaking strain. By understanding this rule the boat angler can decipher which boat rod better suits his or her needs. As an example you would NOT ideally fish for small species like sea bream using a 30/50 class rod, as this type of rod would be far too stiff to register the light bites produced by this small fish. On the other hand using a 12/15 class boat rod while targeting conger eels would prove fatal, as such a powerful fish could easily snap light fishing tackle including the rod.

To help you choose a boat rod to suit your budget and experience all of our boat rods are presented on a single page ordered by ascending price. This should allow you to compare the rods available across all price ranges and manufacturers at a glance.

Boat fishing can be extremely rewarding and fun when practiced safely with the right tackle. If you would like any help after browsing our range of boat rods, please drop us an email or give us a call as we are more than happy to help.
